Three more states adopted legalized sports wagering this week, with Maryland, Louisiana, and South Dakota joining a trend that now covers half of the country.
Three other states, Hawaii, Massachusetts and Ohio, have active legislation that would allow sports wagering.
As sports wagering spreads, more states will adopt sports wagering. The reasoning is simple; citizens in border communities will cross the line to an adjoining state that allows it, spending money that could be spent in the state where they live.

While it’s unlikely that all 50 states will adopt sports wagering (not all 50 have lottery systems), plenty more will enhance the pool in which they wet their budgetary beaks by allowing further expansion of gambling activities that can be regulated and, more importantly, taxed.
On June 11, 2018, Gov. Phil Murphy signed the sports betting bill that had passed the previous week. A William Hill sportsbook at Monmouth Park took the first bets on Thursday, June 14 at 10:30 a.m. Murphy was the first customer in line. The Borgata in Atlantic City booked sports bets 30 minutes later. The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 put a federal ban on state-authorized sports gambling in every state that did not meet already legalize sports betting by the 1991 deadline.

States classified as “Legal – Not Yet Operational” have authorized sports betting, but have yet to launch. “Active or Pre-Filed Legislation” denotes jurisdictions where bills to legalize single-game sports betting have been pre-filed/introduced in the state legislature or where a voter referendum is scheduled. There could soon be many more states where online betting is legal. Nine states are projected to legalize some form of sports wagers in 2020, while an additional 6 have laws in consideration that. Legal online sports gambling is increasing throughout the United States. Several states have already legalized sports betting, while many others have begun discussions on how sports betting bills will benefit their state and can be passed.
